Siberian Banya
A basement sauna shaped by the Siberian banya tradition. Warm wood, hand-wrapped rope corners, low light, and an entrance integrated with the existing washroom into one continuous wellness space.
The client wanted a sauna that felt like the countryside banyas they grew up with, not a contemporary spa room. Warm. Rustic. Honest. A space pulled directly from memory and made to live in a Midtown Toronto basement.
Comfort, authenticity, and function led every decision. Modern trim was set aside in favour of materials and details that matched the tradition. The brief was personal, so the build had to be too.
Hand-wrapped rope corners
Where most builds use modern trim, we wrapped the corners with natural rope, by hand. It softens the geometry, holds the rustic feel together, and is a detail you only see in real countryside banyas.
Warm wood, low light
Natural wood finishes throughout, paired with low, warm lighting placed to mimic a wood-burning room. The colour temperature was chosen to match the materials, not the room.
Integrated entrance & washroom
We absorbed the existing basement washroom and entrance into the build, so the sauna isn't a room you visit. It's a sequence you move through. Undress, rinse, sweat, cool, repeat.

The finished space carries the atmosphere of a classic countryside sauna. It doesn't reference the tradition. It belongs to it.
